March is Women’s History Month

Why Do We Celebrate Women’s History Month?

Women’s history month is a month where we celebrate, spotlight, and highlight, the contributions of women both historically and contemporary. We, as women, need not have only a month to celebrate each other; however, March has dedicated its own month to women so let’s rock it, shall we? Women’s history month first came to be as a national celebration in 1982. It later began to expand into a full month of honoring women, their roles in society, and their contributions to our society.

The goal of Women's History Month is to highlight the achievements and contributions made by a variety of women in a variety of fields: filmmakers, artists, engineers, and pioneers of all kinds. The reality is that women have always played a vital role in U.S. History, therefore, giving credit where credit is due and recognizing women who have changed the world in so many ways is invaluable.

Who is the founder of Women’s History Month?

Molly Murphy MacGregor, Mary Ruthsdotter, Maria Cuevas, Paula Hammett, and Bette Morgan founded the National Women's History Alliance in 1980 and are largely credited for being the founders of Women's History Month. It is their coalition that ultimately led to the proclamation of Women's History Week, then Month.

There are plenty more women who contributed to our US History such a Abigail Adams, Susan B. Anthony, Rosa Parks, and Ruth B. Ginsburg. Many more women have contributed to our society in all forms of media, storytelling, stage, podcasts, news, and radio. The names listed about are just a few names of women who have impacted the lives on other women in our society.

So, What Makes Women So Special?

If we take a closer look at ourselves, we can see that we are each doing one thing to celebrate women’s month. We are special because we bring people into this world. We are the ones that shape the world. WE are the ones who are strong enough not to fall apart because of the inequality that we continually receive. Women are the backbone of this world. We are pragmatic, resilient, and walk through life with grace. If that isn’t enough to celebrate women (yourself included), I am not sure what else there is to say. Remember that we are surrounded by incredible women who persist in a world that limits them. So, rock on, woman!
