The Benefit of Owning A Pet
The Benefits of Having Animals
Research shows that there are many benefits that come with pet ownership. As an avid pet lover, a mother to four (4!) dogs, a cat, a fish, and an almost 5-year-old boy, I can attest to this! People tend to live a potentially healthier, longer life, and marked reduction in stressors when becoming a pet owner. Also, there is that component of having a sweet loving friend for the duration of our lives. While pets (dogs especially) are considered “man’s best friend,” it is a mutually beneficial relationship that humans share with their dogs, cats, and other animals.
While the reciprocal benefits of pet ownership are wide and very-long standing, humans began their relationships with canines when wolves scavenged food from them, resulting in domestication of these animals for warmth, protection, hunting, and gathering. Cats became domesticated for foraging for scraps, and even demonstrating their usefulness in controlling those pesky rodents. What are the benefits of owning a pet? Here are some reasons to think about adopting a cute little something into your home:
Pets Boost Physical Activity and More
I suppose that this one was not a big surprise but just read on… Owning a dog requires us to exert a little bit of energy. The reality is that dogs need to be walked and exercised. This means that their owners will obtain more physical activity, of course, depending on the dog’s breed. The fact is that older people are more likely to take regular walks with a dog than they would with their fellow human (s). The more biological and medical reasons include (and not limited to):
Lowered cortisol, a stress hormone, and increased serotonin and dopamine – hormones associated with happiness and well-being.
Lowered blood pressure and heart rate.
Increased daily exercise in petting, lifting, grooming, and walking.
Lowered risk of depression and stress-induced diseases.
Lowered risk of stroke.
Pets Increase Socialization and Emotional Rescue
Pets not only provide loyal companionship; they attract social interactions with not only humans but with other animal lovers. People will stop you if you are walking a cute puppy which invites a conversation! There are many psychological benefits of owning a pet. Pets can reduce anxiety, increase relaxation, and create a sense of peace. The fact is that pets create companionship, security, calm, and purpose.
